Philosophical thinking and animal welfare in scientific experimentation: Retrospective analysis in the face of ethical needs due to the health contingency by COVID-19

Purpose/Context. This article seeks to contextualize how philosophical thinking about animal care and welfare, throughout history, has been the basis for promoting the protection, use and dignified treatment of animals in experimentation. All this with the aim of contributing to the search for solutions to multiple health problems such as the current pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, under ethical considerations.
Methodology/Approach. A qualitative, analytical and narrative review of the literature related to the philosophical thinking about animal care and their right to humane treatment is made, and it is related to the need to carry out studies on animals to contribute to the solution of emerging problems such as the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, without leaving aside the reflection on the ethical use of them.
Results/Findings. Philosophical thinking about animal rights contributed to the formal discussion on animal welfare and humane treatment, particularly in the context of bioethics and experimentation.
Discussion/Conclusions/Contributions. As a result, social and academic groups emerged that promoted the establishment of ethical codes and guidelines currently applied to the study of various pathologies that afflict humans and other species, as well as in the development of therapeutic agents; such is the case of the development of drugs and vaccines that made it possible to address the situation by COVID-19.
