Remediación de sedimentos contaminados con mercurio a través del uso de l-cisteína

El mercurio es un metal pesado toxico que tiene la capacidad de bioacumularse y biomagnificarse al ser liberado al medio ambiente; debido a su mal uso y manipulación en distintos procesos, actualmente en Colombia este contaminante amenaza ecosistemas enteros y representa una problemática de salud pública para varias regiones de país. Como alternativa de solución se empleó un agente quelantes para estimular la conversión del mercurio móvil-toxico a especies no móviles, para lo cual se utilizó como modelo de sedimentos el Río Sur (South River), ubicado en Waynesboro, VA, USA; las muestras fueron sometidas a un proceso de remediación mediante el uso de L-Cisteína, un aminoácido conocido por ser un agente quelante de metales pesados a través de su grupo tiol; del mismo modo, se empleó una solución comercial llamada “MERCON X” usada como descontaminante y supresor de vapores de mercurio. Tras el proceso de remediación, se presenció el aumento de especies de mercurio no móviles en la muestra tratada con L-Cisteína, lo que hace del aminoácido una posible alternativa de bajo costo para la remediación de sedimentos contaminados con mercurio.
