A menudo, hablar de la muerte en medicina veterinaria se considera un tabú, sin embargo es
un hecho tan propio de los animales que se hace necesario entenderlo. En una cruda definición,
la muerte es el final de la vida; solo donde ha habido vida existirá la muerte.
Con los avances de la ciencia, la capacidad clínica para buscar extender la vida plantea alternativas
como la cirugía a corazón abierto, la implantación de marcapasos, el trasplantes de órganos,
la nutrición parenteral, la endoscopia con fibra óptica, la quimioterapia contra el cáncer, entre
otros procedimientos inexistentes en el siglo pasado en medicina veterinaria. La tecnología
para prolongar la vida ha hecho que el término “muerte natural” pierda sentido, dando lugar a
luchas éticas complejas frente a la inutilidad médica en ciertos procedimientos.
En la práctica clínica y de salud pública frente a la atención de animales de compañía se presentan
diferentes dilemas, hechos que se hacen más complejos cuando se analizan desde cada
uno de los actores que intervienen en la toma de decisiones. La formación y experiencia de
los profesionales que participan del proceso, la complejidad del caso y las ayudas diagnósticas
disponibles hacen que el procedimiento gane celeridad. En otras ocasiones, la toma de decisiones
puede ser dispendiosa, haciendo difícil identificar las diferencias críticas entre los actores
(propietarios o responsables del paciente y médicos veterinarios).
