Our aim is to examine the contextualist approach offered in Ludwig Wittgenstein’s On Certainty to the skeptical problem of the external world, which consists in the impossibility of knowing the empirical world. We will reconstruct this problem using Rene Descartes’ dream argument as basis. Wittgenstein replies that the existence of a surrounding world to the observer is part of the assumptions of language games, thus that problem is inadmissible. We will evaluate Wittgenstein’s approach and understand it as a contextualist proposal that dissolves the problem by reconsidering its presuppositions. Our contextualist reading defends that the standards of attribution of truth, meaning and sense are sensitive to a context of enunciation, which, in Wittgenstein’s work, takes the name of language game.
