Contexto, estado actual y replanteo del debate internalismo vs. externalismo en las teorías de la evolución biológica

Resumen

En este artículo examino el debate entre las perspectivas externalistas e internalistas en las teorías de la evolución y explicaré el estado actual de la misma, para esbozar un marco ontológico que supera esta dualidad y es congruente con la teoría de sistemas en desarrollo (TSD) de Oyama. Enmarcare la discusión destacando el legado de Lamarck como precursor de la auto-organización (AO) y el internalismo, en contraposición a Darwin promotor del externalismo con la formulación del principio de selección natural (SN) como el factor prevalente y más importante de la evolución. Mostraré el resurgir del internalismo en el siglo XX con la termodinámica de sistemas lejos del equilibrio y la formulación de teorías epigenéticas compatibles con la idea de AO, dentro del cual la “selección orgánica” de Baldwin y la “selección interna” de Whyte, que explican la reconfiguración de relaciones internas y externas, recobran significación valiosa. Con miras a develar las relaciones entre AO y SN, examinaré la debilidad del externalismo de Darwin, en cuanto se fundamenta en la extrapolación de la selección artificial de razas domésticas, a la generación de especies por SN. Para ello me fundamentaré en la idea de las especies como individuos, la cual permite equiparar las etapas de especiación propuestas por Flegr con las etapas caracterizadas por Salthe para todo sistema en desarrollo: i) juvenil o de plasticidad, ii) madurez o de constreñimientos estructurales positivos, y iii) senectud o de constreñimientos negativos. En este modelo la SN queda enmarcada dentro de un proceso más general de AO donde convergen las explicaciones genéticas, y de construcción de nicho. Mientras que la AO estimula la emergencia de novedades que son sometidas al escrutinio de la SN, la SN potencia la evolución favoreciendo las formas suficientemente plásticas como para explorar nuevas configuraciones por AO. Planteo que la dicotomía internalismo/externalismo se supera por medio de una ontología que concibe los organismos como sistemas organizados a múltiples niveles (metabólico, fisiológico, ontogénico, conductual y de interacción social) en el que cada uno está permanentemente ajustándose y por tanto las variaciones poblacionales no obedecen exclusivamente a variaciones genéticas azarosas, sino a la estabilización de vías epigenéticas, mediante la adopción de estados internos accesibles. Esta ontología pone de relieve una dimensión semiótica si consideramos que todos los sistemas vivientes a diferentes escalas interpretan las perturbaciones físicas del entorno local como señales conducentes a la adopción de ajustes restrictivos internos y de las consiguientes acciones proyectadas hacia el exterior.
